What is an advocate: 

1. one that pleads the cause of another
2. one that defends or maintains a cause or proposal
3. one that supports or promotes the interests of another

 

Who is an advocate: 

All of us are advocates for our children. Collectively, we CAN make a difference.

 

Why do we advocate:

We advocate, letting our voices be heard, regarding issues that affect our children, families, schools and communities. 

 

When do we advocate:

Advocacy is an on-going process. 

 

How do we advocate:

There are many ways to become involved and stay informed about issues affecting our children and schools. Please check-out the many ways you can be involved and make a difference.

 

Involvement at a Local Level

• Register to vote AND go vote!   Cherokee County Elections and Voter Registration has a wealth of information.
• Attend Cherokee County School District Board Meetings or read the minutes from the meetings if you can’t attend.
• Read the Cherokee County School District Legislative Program at the district website for a guide to the legislative priorities the School District is seeking from the State Legislature.
• Read the local papers such as the Cherokee Ledger News and Cherokee Tribune. 

Involvement on a State Level

• Register to vote AND go vote!
• Visit the Georgia PTA website for issues important to the PTA at a state level.
• Scan headlines in the AJC . 
• Subscribe and read the Capitol Watch Legislative Bulletin by GA PTA’s Legislative guru Sally Fitzgerald.
• Attend Georgia PTA Conferences or workshops.  
• Read GA Department of Education press releases.
• Make contact with local legislators regarding issues that concern you.
• Visit the Georgia General Assembly website to find news and information about the state legislature.

Involvement on a Federal Level 

• Register to vote AND go vote!
• Sign up for the free National PTA This Week in Washington email newsletter.
• Keep up with the current news on the National PTA website.
• Check out United States Senate or United States House of Representatives to track legislation or to get info on legislators. 
• Read newspapers to see what is going on at the federal level of government.
